This Quad was built from the ground up with some very specific design parameters. You can see pictures of the build up here. Some of the features include: rear suspension, high cargo capacity, reversible rear seat, dog-running attachments, ecospeed electric system.
This electric-powered beast allows the captain/driver to pedal while the passenger in the rear is free to watchover the dogs.
The seat and boom are adjustable to allow for different sized riders.
In the rear extendable dog running attachments were added to allow proper spacing of the dogs.
The custom springers are adjustable so they can be set to the right height for the dogs.
The rear seat mounts to the cargo rack and can be reversed when the rider wants to face the rear.
The boom is adjustable via our custom boom lock.
Besides getting power from the captain, this Quad is equipped with a custom EcoSpeed middrive. The EcoSpeed operates independantly from the pedals and can be used on its own or in conjunction with human power. Power is supplied by two 48V batteries.
The EcoSpeed system has its own drive chain to the jackshaft and operates independantly from the pedaling system.
The heart of the drivetrain is the jackshaft which ties everything together. Chains from the EcoSpeed motor, the pedals, and the Nuvinci transmission are all connected via freewheels so that each operated independantly.
The drive train looks a little complicated, but everything is routed so all systems operate independantly. Power from the pedals and the motor go through the jackshaft and into the Nuvinci N360 transmission.
The Nuvinci N360 CVT Transmission is the heart of the drivetrain with smooth power transfer to the axle.
On the underside you can see part of the steering mechanism.
Because the Nuvinci and pedal chains are both on the same side of the jackshaft we incorporated a stabilizer bar to equalize the force on the jackshaft.
The Nuvinci N360 is our preferred transmission for electric setups. It has a wide range, shifts smooth, and is very strong.
At the front we installed the Patterson 2-speed drive.
Because of the rigitity of the frame we built a limited-suspension rear axle which has about 2 inches of travel. This allows all four wheels to stay on the ground while turning or riding over uneven terrain.
The rear axle housing operates like the rear end of a pickup truck. The multiple heim joints allow it to pivot on one axis while preventing twisting from the torque of the chain.
Our “Posi-Axle” utilizes double freewheels to prevent the slippage that can occur with a geared differential.
All four wheels utilize the Avid BB7 disc brakes.
The rear seat can be positioned anywhere along the cargo rack. It can be set to face forward or backwards.
The front seat can be positioned along the frame in any of the holes on the mount.
Both shifters were combined on the right side so that the throttle could operate more easily on the left hand.
The throttle is easily accessible with the left thumb and feels natural.
The steering pivot uses a split-level tierod system. The actual pivot uses sealed bearings to provide smooth steering.
